MARYLAND THEFT / PROPERTY LAWYER

Maryland has a broad theft statute under Criminal Law §7-104. If you read the statute, one can learn the broad definition of theft which, among other things, includes shoplifting, larceny, credit card theft, exploitation of vulnerable adults, extortion, possession of stolen property, unauthorized removal of property, and employee theft.

Under the Maryland statute, the severity of the charges depends on the value of the stolen item. The following are possible penalties for Maryland theft:

  • Stolen property or services of $100 or less – a misdemeanor charge with possible imprisonment of up to 90 days and/or fines up to $500
  • Stolen property or services under $1000 – a misdemeanor charge with possible imprisonment of up to 18 months and/or fines up to $500
  • Stolen property or services between $1000 and $10,000 – a felony charge with possible imprisonment of up to 10 years and/or fines up to $10,000
  • Stolen property or services between $10,000 and $100,000 – a felony charge with possible imprisonment of up to 15 years and/or fines up to $15,000
  • Stolen property or services greater than $100,000 – a felony charge with possible imprisonment of up to 25 years and/or fines up to $25,000

In certain situations, if you are found guilty of this crime you will be required to make restitution to the owner of the full value of the stolen item. Additionally, if you are a subsequent offender, the penalties get harsher. Theft crimes in Maryland result in serious penalties and they will threaten your freedom and future.
